Memorial Day
A perfect day for light housekeeping and complaining.
First of all, I wanted to issue a thank you to the people who have been paying to subscribe to SIHWIA. It’s always humbling when anyone reads what I’ve written and finds it worth paying for. As I said a year ago, I’m not a fan of making the boards of Facebook or Instagram -I’M SORRY META - multi-billionaires and being rewarded in turn with the tiny bump of Dopamine that comes with every “like” and reply.
And what better way to reward my paying customers than starting the week with a free post that everybody can read? If it makes you guys feel better, I won’t see any of that subscription money until at least June 15th.
This is a kind of a lazy blog post because I’m frankly in a lazy kind of mood. I’m a full-time student at a prestigious University, and I’m a full-time comedian, and I’m a full-time producer, and I’m a full-time comedy writer, and I’m a full-time member of my family, and since I am not 21 any more, I am TIRED. Not that I’m complaining about any of the above by any stretch of the imagination - my life is literally the best it’s been in a very long time - but I had to acknowledge that the month of May has to be for recovering from everything before diving back into my life.
What does the above have to do with anything? Great question. The answer is, in order to be a funny writer I have to be out in the world observing and interacting with it. And this month I’ve been in my apartment watching movies and television. And there’s only so many funny observations you can make about media culture that aren’t being made hundreds of times a second on Twitter every day. So what’s left except to sit outdoors at this Starbucks and appreciate the weather and the lack of traffic and the view of one of the true lasting icons of the film business:
I do love LA. More on that in a future editorial. In the meantime, another of my side hustles is selling original designs on shirts, mugs, and puzzles. This morning a fellow in Australia purchased a light sweatshirt with the illustration at the bottom of this e-mail. Designs run the gamut from Pride month to pop culture to Grateful Dead designs that keep getting taken down by the band’s management.
You can check out my store by clicking the shirt image or going to hacktester.org. (Bookmark it! I add 5-30 new designs a week! And if sales aren’t good, I’ll have to go back to stripping my way through college! Or even worse, podcasting!)
See you in a couple of days!
