Surprise

I know, I know. You all subscribed to this Substack because it's so nice and quiet, it's a pleasant break from the daily grind of deleting emails unread.

I haven’t had much to say the past year or so. Hell, I’ve barely had time to breathe. I love what I’m doing - going to the best film school in the world if you don’t count the American Film Institute - but it’s taken a bit of a mental and physical toll. I’m not going to complain, but I will say that I have been breaking my perfectionist streak as of late.

And I realized that my perfectionism has extended to my Substack here. I’m worried that if this isn’t the funniest, wittiest, most extremely entertaining blog post you’ve read all year, then I’ve failed. Now multiply that by two or three times a week, and you’ve got a recipe for a blog that reads like so much comedy writing does - straining and sweaty.

Not to put that down. Writing comedy is hard. It takes not just discipline, but also flow. The discipline to sit down every day and treat it like a job, even if you’re exhausted from spending 8 hours in front of a computer, that’s tough. If you’ve got it, then congratulations that is lit…
